This unconventional film follows internationally renowned philosopher-poet Bayo Akomolafe, a time-traveling “fugitive” who tries to escape a colonized future. His destiny is simple: to return home, to his family, and to a sink full of dishes waiting for him. But when notions of time are inverted by an encounter with a crossroads of Exu, “home” ceases to be a fixed point, his odyssey becomes not a problem to solve, but an invitation to meet, dance with, and learn from him.

Why this film?

We are dealing with increasingly greater global challenges, and we realize that we do not have the cognitive resources to create new questions for old problems. In this film, we will investigate how cosmologies and perceptions of the world can make room for other ways of living on a collapsing planet

What’s different about this film?

Plenty of documentaries and artistic projects address the climate crisis. However, we believe there’s a large gap, especially in Brazil, in taking systemic approaches that interconnect the economic, social, racial, political, and ecological crises, as observed in Bayo’s vision. His poetic perspective, which brings philosophical theories that rise from spiritual visions, resonates with many people who are eager to feel part of a possible transformation in the world.

História

Still_1_Regenerar.jpg

In March 2018, in a small town in southwest England, inside a 14th-century stone building, Maria Clara Parente, the film's director, listened to Bayo Akomolafe for the first time. The next day, Maria Clara filmed an interview with him for the docuseries This is Not the Truth. It was the beginning of a long-lasting partnership.

So, after filming this interview, we started, together with Ana Clara Cenamo from the Spanda Production team, developing a documentary series called What is Emerging?, where Bayo was one of the people we interviewed in the film. To bring Bayo to film in Brazil, we partnered with Emerge(A Berlin-based media platform) and received funds that made his trip from Chennai (India) to Brazil possible. Since then, Bayo has come three more times to Brazil, and on one of these trips, we filmed an interview with him for the feature documentary "Regenerar: Possible Paths on a Damaged Planet."

In six years, we’ve developed a friendship and a synergy of ways of thinking and a growing interest in Bayo's ideas portrayed in the other films we’ve done with him. That's how the idea of creating this particular film, focused on Bayo's work, came to life. We believe his unique approach to climate crises through afrocene lenses is necessary nowadays. This film is part of a project called Regenerar, which creates films for a change of consciousness addressing climate collapse. The project is a partnership between Spanda Produtora, created by Ana Clara Cenamo, and Simbiótica Filmes, created by Maria Clara.
